My pal-from-high-school and online-knight-in-shining-armor, Buzz-Armfield-of-the-Asheboro-Armfields-who-gave-one-million-dollars-to-the-Randolph-Hospital-Cancer-Center lost his Mother on Sunday morning. She had suffered a massive stroke two weeks prior.
I never met Mrs. Armfield, Sr. But, based on her son's vivid descriptions (Buzz is nothing if not a gifted story-teller), I imagined her to be a feisty, independent, albeit old-school Southern dame. Like many of Asheboro's "right people", she referred to me as "that woman" (Buzzy was apologetic), and it made me smile.
I took no offense. Many older folk in Asheboro are a product of the mill-town environment and their time.
Audrey Seltz Armfield's obituary can be found here. A worn-out/world-weary (after two weeks of dealing with end-of-life issues - part of that time spent in an institution whose senior management he does not trust/has no use for) Buzz wryly commented that one could not read it Monday morning in Asheboro's Courier-Tribune.
Indeed, the good citizens of Asheboro cannot read it at all online unless they PAY for the privilege. It's just my opinion that, as a matter of public record and community service, some things at a newspaper are NOT "proprietary", and should not be hidden behind a paywall. Bereaved families have enough to cope with and worry about without their local newspaper making it harder to get the word out.
More later, I think. But not now.

You can read it, and for free at the News & Record.....

Thanks Mary, even if you are "that woman". The nursing and physical therapy staff at Randolph Hospital, as well as the staff at Woodland Hill were wonderful people. They made the final days a bit easier for us. But, after spending a week in Randolph Hospital, and looking around, whatever they pay Morrison and Eblin is wasted and could be put to far better use in the facilities. My non-native spouse was not easily impressed, and made a rather loud snorting noise when I told her what the head of said hospital is paid annually. And, she was not interested in seeing the Cancer Center.....
Buzzy, as I've told you many times before (and blogged here), the nursing and ancillary medcial staff was NEVER EVER the problem. They work hard. Back in the day, they wanted to learn/be better.
The rot is at the top.
Add a mostly-apathetic-about-what-has-been-going-on medical staff and a rubber-stamping-board-of-directors and what you have is a small-town community that has been taken for a great big expensive ride. Morrison will be laughing all the way to the bank and a phat retirement.
And, after the Board puts on the show of a "search", the job will go to Steve Eblin - who, in terms of the nasty things that were done to me, is far more culpable than his can't-do-anything-without-a-consultant's-opinion boss.
If there is ANYONE responsible for the existence of this blog it's that oily, ethically-challenged, lying jerk.
In terms of offering any real policing for the public good, our useless newspaper is just that - useless. If they are dying a slow death, they have no one but themselves to blame.
