As an update to this Housecalls post, this morning, a Wake County jury got lost in the smoke and mirrors of the legal definition of malice . . . and in lieu of second-degree-murder, found Dr. Raymond Cook guilty of involuntary manslaughter, felony death-by-vehicle, and driving-while-impaired in the death of Winston-Salem ballerina, Elena Shapiro
The case and its outcome only reinforce every sad, sorry stale-as-the-drunken-slob's-breath-after-he-gave-his-victim-mouth-to-mouth cliche about doctors-as-drunks being above-the-law that there ever was. And in Asheboro, we've certainly lived that over the years.
But on the bright side for Dr. Cook, I'm thinking that perhaps he can work at Randolph Hospital when he gets out of prison . . . IF he actually goes to prison.
After all, CEO Bob Morrison, did tell everyone in Asheboro that we needed alcohol in every nook and cranny in order to recruit doctors.
The good Dr. Cook would fit right in with all the "right people".

Help me out here, you go to undergraduate, then medical school for four more years, after that the residency thing, and even more time for any sort of specialty...and for being stupid enough to drive drunk, not to mention a touch of arrogance and no apparent regard for the lives of others, you only have to spend three years for killing a young woman who never had a chance to fully enjoy the wonders of a life she so deserved?
Dr. Cook should get the the Josef Mengele Award for medical compassion....
I'm told that the jury was more or less hung at 10-2 for second-degree murder - and the two men (figures) "against" would not be swayed on the matter of intent (makes you wonder if they're closet drunks).
One of the jurors complained that they could not ask questions in Court - or speak after the verdict - stating that they felt they did not have all of the facts about Cook's past offenses and tendencies.
And/so in helping you out, yes, Buzzy, there ARE some morons living amongst us who believe your (very apt) summary to be true.
What nauseated me most the most were some of the stellar examples of citizenship on the N&O's boards - blogging anonymously that this was a "just" verdict.
In The Pig's eye.
