If the comments on the Raleigh N&O's story on Governor Perdue's new "ethics" bill are any any indication, the average Joe and Jane Schmoe (or should I say, Schmuck) of North Carolina are just not buying it. The best comments thus far:
Hopefully, her handlers can guide her to the document. (Notaliberal)
And:
Can somebody slip in a resignation letter for her to sign instead? I mean, it's not like she's ever going to read it or anything, since she doesn't think it applies to her. (Outhousecat)
And:
Trust is EARNED from your actions, it not something you talk people into or enact into law. She can sign any bill or enact any law she likes. Until the people in government ACTUALLY have real consequences for breaking the law NOTHING will matter. You cannot change a leopards spots and laws don't make criminals stop being criminals. (Nocontest)
While the first comment made me laugh out loud, the third one had me all somber & morose (and angry) again.
For it is the story of my life for the last twelve years (February 2 and August 2 are ALWAYS bad days for me - regular readers know why).
You can have all of the contracts and agreements and noble, high-minded laws in the world in place, but if no one in the North Carolina "justice system" enforces them, they do not MEAN a thing.
I am here, in this blogosphere, because once-upon-a-time in Asheboro, North Carolina, ethics meant smethics. I want Bob Morrison and Steven Eblin, of "non-profit" Randolph Hospital to answer for what they did to a GOOD doctor in public service . . . a homegrown Pediatrician who did everything they asked of her and so much more . . . and who, for her trouble, was treated like dog-excrement on the bottom of Mike Miller and Keith Crisco's shoes.
And until they do, Bev's precious new law is much ado about nothing.
