Why, in the middle of the night, did Randolph Hospital LDRP nurses call Dr. Mary Johnson to help a patient-not-her-own . . . when Cone-owned Dr. Mick Irwin was screwing up?
Why should Bob Morrison, Steven Eblin and Mike Bridges have recognized Dr. Cheryl Freeman's letter as the vindictive, spiteful, entitled hatchet-job that it was and treated the vicious nastygram accordingly - instead of trying to manufacture a bogus/wrongful "disruptive physician" termination around it?
Exhibit A - a letter from Dr. Robert Scott - was posted yesterday.
Exhibit B, dated October 19, 1998, is from Dr. Randy McVeigh - a staff anesthesiologist at Randolph before he too was driven out of town.
Randy was a good egg. When he found out I had been fired, he went on a kind of reconnaissance mission to find out what was going on. He reported back that the decision was "political".
At Randolph, "political" usually translates to Morrison, Eblin and whatever deal they're trying to work with Cone Hospital on any given day.
To Whom It May Concern:
I am a staff Anesthesiologist at Randolph Hospital, Inc., in Asheboro, North Carolina, and am writing this letter of recommendation at the request of Dr. Mary Johnson. Dr. Johnson is, and has been, in practice at Randolph Hospital as a Pediatrician for approximately three years. During this period, from July 1995 to present, I have worked peripherally with Dr. Johnson as her colleague in a number of clinical cases, mostly in neonatal care, but in some others where I assisted with airway or venous access. We also worked together in the purchase of a neonatal ventilator and establishing credentialling policy for its use. On all occasions, I was comfortable with her practice style and clinical judgement, and would recommend her without reservation.
Professionally, Dr. Johnson is a passionate, dedicated, and intelligent individual whose standards are self-evident. She always cares for children and families with compassion and empathy and makes them feel at ease. Her clinica/technical skills are polished and her knowledge base is excellent. She has been called to "rescue" other physiciains when serious problems arose.
Personally, Mary is a very assertive and outspoken individual. To some this is an attribute, and among those (of which I count myself) she is well-liked and respected. Much like myself, she came to a situation that demanded improvement, and would be satisfied by nothing less. This was not always well recevied, especially among administrative staff. To my knowledge, Dr. Johnson always got along well with the other medical staff, surgeons and other physicians with whom she had contact. She is very dependable and trustworthy, and shows appropriate self-motivation.
To my knowledge, Dr. Johnson does not have any history of mental illness or personality defect, and has never had a problem with chemical dependency or alcoholism. In conclusion, I can recommend Dr. Mary Johnson without reservation. She is a fine Pediatrician in whom I have respect. She is a genuine patient advocate and working with her is a pleasure. She would be an assest to any department, either on temporary or permanent assignment.
J. Randall McVeigh, M.D.
Chairman, Department of Anesthesiology
Randolph Hospital
I can picture Bob and Steve having seizures at their desks right now;)
For the record, Randy and I were not close enough for him to have known about my long ago battles with depression and an eating disorder (things that I've only recently become comfortable talking about publicly - as is probably true of most physicians who have struggled with such demons). The issue did not come up in our day-to-day interactions in Asheboro because it wasn't an issue anymore.
Although, what the "arrogant & cliquish" mill-town megalomaniacs running Randolph put me through - both before and after they fired me - certainly could have driven the sanest of the sane off the deep end.
Once again, I cannot emphasize enough to any Pediatrician looking at a position with RMA or Randolph Hospital: STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM THIS HOSPITAL AS LONG AS BOB MORRISON AND STEVEN EBLIN REMAIN EMPLOYED TO RUN IT!This is especially important if you are a a passionate woman of substance with high standards and strong opinions.
