Relevant to this post and its comments, several folks have asked me, "What can we do about the newspaper (i.e. the Courier Tribune)?"
(1) If you think the Courier's stories are biased and their coverage of local news inadequate, cancel your subscription. You can get your news from the Internet - or even better, the weekly Randolph Guide. And you can send a clear message . . . that resounds loudly at a time when every subscription counts.
(2) Then, contact the Stephens Media Group and tell them why you cancelled - and give them a chance to fix it. Let them know that Asheboro needs a new publisher . . . once without private entrances to his office for "the right people" . . . one who does not bow to conflicted interests or play favorites . . . one who will not ignore stories right under his nose (like the drunken brawls at local establishments in the wake of an alcohol referendum that 40% of the populace did not want) . . . one who is not afraid to take on important people if they're wrong.
Newspapers are dying slow, painful deaths everywhere. Now I'm willing to buy the textbook excuse that a good portion of the problem is due the evolution of the Internet . . . where a lowly "wack-job" blogger like me can scoop the local daily (my post was up before the Courier's story). But only to a point.
It's my contention that the biggest problem the media has is that it has (1) sucked up to the powers-that-be for too long, (2) completely forgotten how to do investigative reporting, and (3) as a result of #1 and 2 have lost all credibility - along with their readers. The Fourth Estate's foundation is rotten.
The Stephens Media Group states its vision thusly: Stephens Media™ started with this idea: Give readers what they can't get anywhere else - hometown news. That idea grew into a multi-media company that anticipates what customers need and provides it.
I am sorry, in Asheboro, that's just a damned lie. The Stephens Media Group is NOT providing what the citizens of Asheboro need.

Oh My Gawd!!!
You mean that thingy that they drop in front of the house is actually a newspaper? I just thought that it was bird cage liner via home delivery.
It's very sad what the Courier has become.
