One of the more interesting e-mail exchanges I was involved in over the Christmas break concerned the tales of corruption seeping out of (get it?) the Greensboro and High Point ABC stores. It's not yet fodder for the blog . . . I'm too busy with other things.
Asheboro's store opened last month, and by all accounts is doing well. Dapper Jimmy Riddle (I miss hats too) is managing it. The Courier, of course, did a big article today - featuring a photo of Riddle checking Steve Schmidly out at the counter.
It's not the first photo the paper has published of Steve buying hooch. Makes you wonder, does the Asheboro ABC store have any other customers that the Courier could photograph? I mean, the margin of victory was so wide and all, you'd think folks would be proud to line up at the counter for a snapshot.
Riddle had this to say, “We’re going to do our best to follow the letter of the law and run a completely above-board operation that the people of the city can be proud of.”
I'm not worried about Jimmy. But Schmidly gives me pause. The mini-bottles attached to the sides of fifths are promos, Schmid. They're not for under-the-table resale.
We will be watching. My advice is to keep it transparent as a bottle of Stolichnaya.

If I still lived in the area, I would have no problem having my photo published in the Courier. What's there to be ashamed of?
But then, I would much prefer to see private liquor stores in NC.
Well, you can join the (fairly big) club of people in this town who have no shame. Schmid's the President.
It amazes me how many people (on both sides of the issue) who no longer live in the area . . . or who never lived here at all . . . care about alcohol in Asheboro.
I suppose there is a good argument to be made that private liquor stores would be less corrupt than ones overseen by the government.
Of course, that was the theory on Wall Street too.
