Well, my favorite Asheboro attorney (not) was first in line to purchase alcohol at Asheboro's new ABC store. And a dubious honor it is . . . for one friend even dourly likened it to "cutting the ribbon at an abortion clinic".
Feelings are still running a little hot on this one.
Schmid likes his hooch. In fact, I gifted him with an expensive bottle of whiskey after his legal prowess/due diligence on behalf of his client (not) helped me "win" (not) my battle against Randolph Hospital.
The "Curious Tribune'" includes a photo of the momentous event with its online coverage of the store opening. I don't subscribe to the sad/sorry rag, so I don't know if the paper had the insensitivity & poor taste to rub the picture of a grinning Schmidly purchasing booze into the 40% of its reader's faces who did not want alcohol sales in Asheboro.
But I expect they did. David Renfro is a predictable creature.
Of course, "Mini-Schmid" (Brooke) sits on the ABC Board (little doubt as reward for her efforts to bring alcohol to the community she did not really grow up in). Board chairman, Russell Walker, had this to say, “The desire on the part of the board was to get it open so we can start generating the sales that can start generating the revenue for the City of Asheboro that will in turn benefit the whole community.”
Sooner or later, I expect that will morph into something akin to, "It's all for the children".
I expect that, over the years, some children who might have had a chance to grow up in a town like Mayberry, will beg to differ.
Time will certainly tell.
