Ron Howard has never done anything like this before. You see, he's "desperate".
I gotta say. It shows. It wasn't very "funny" either. To take these beloved/iconic TV characters out of era and context - and associate them with on political party or another - is like colorizing "It's A Wonderful Life". It's trading on something that should not be traded.
Someone really needs to take away the artistic license.
Update: On the other hand, since we're already trading, how about this (hat tip: Jeff Sykes)?

They should have done Mayberry 2008
Gomer is gay and a life partner with Goober. Andy is under indictment for campaign fund misappropriation. Barney is on the take and looks the other way while Otis deals crack to Ernest T. Bass. Aunt Bea is hooked on Oxycontin and sent to rehab. Thelma Lou is a closet alcoholic, and Helen Crump is caught having sex with one of her students.
That is the reality of Mayberry today. They should have left well enough alone with nostalgia.
Indeed.
Mayberry died this summer. Thelma Lou doesn't have to be a "closet" alcoholic anymore.
