According to the Courier Tribune, the subject of annexation came back up at Tuesday's Asheboro City Council meeting. It appears that the "right people" are simply not going to give up on putting the screws to the residents of Dave's Mountain.
It's their sad, sorry version of "wealth redistribution".
Economic times being what they are, it's likely that the city will need to chose (at least in the immediate time period) between figuring out a way to lay miles and miles of sewer line in solid rock (something the people living on the rock do not need or want) . . . OR shoring up a three-to-four mile section of East 64 with a sewer line that would solve a lot of problems for a lot of people AND encourage economic growth along that corridor of highway.
It doesn't seem like a very hard choice to me - but then again, I'm not nearly as smart as Keith Crisco.
It's not been a secret that the snakes on the City Council are plotting to reach their target (i.e. the tax base on the Mountain) - by implementing a plan that annexes small adjacent parcels of land in phases . . . slithering under the radar to surround, divide and conquer.
Some of that plan will actually require special legislation. I think that speaks to how slimy their plan is.
There is a strong undercurrent of resentment in Asheboro - amongst the ordinary folks who did not want alcohol - that all of the people living on Dave's Mountain wanted it - and therefore should be annexed into the city.
They should have "to pay".
During the waning days before the alcohol referendum, my "Spidey" sense was that the Courier was actually playing to/encouraging that sentiment . . . in order to sway public opinion against Mountain residents in future annexation actions.
I'd like to make it very clear here that not everyone on "the Mountain" wanted alcohol - and, in fact, a number of us fought tooth and nail against it.
It was not a fair or fun fight.
And we did not get a vote - although I will concede that several of my wealthier, more influential neighbors bought some.
When the subject of annexation was being heatedly debated this past spring and summer, I made an appearance at one of the public hearings in order to educate my neighbors as to what what really going on behind the scenes . . . "who" was behind it . . . and why (that would be unrepentant, unrestrained greed).
Many, many people have since praised that presentation and that effort - saying that I really opened a lot of eyes by "connecting the dots" in a way that no one ever had before.
I hear a certain Mountain character has a drop-dead funny Halloween display in his front yard pertaining to annexation.
This ghost needs to just GO AWAY.
