My Great Aunt Helen, the nearly 100-year-old Johnson family Matriarch . . . one of the women my middle name pays honor to . . . a kind of substitute grandmother (as Daddy's Mother, Helen, succumbed to breast cancer only a few months after I was born) . . . and a great, grand lady of the old Southern tradition . . . passed away very early this morning. She will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery next month.
Auntie Helen was a lady who appreciated hats. I plan to wear one in her honor at the funeral.
My cousin (her "step"-grandson), Rocky, was with his Nanna at the end. He did a wonderful job taking care of her and managing her affairs in her final years. And he did it out of great love. We are all very grateful, and also very proud of him.
If Daddy were here, he would say, "Son, thank you. You did good." He's not, so I am saying it. "Cousin, thank you. You did good."
I share this loss not to garner sympathy, but to help explain what I anticipate may be a sabbatical from regular blogging for a few weeks. If I do blog, it will be very sporadic. I have several irons in the fire this month (one related to the continued subject matter of this blog) that need my undivided attention.

prayers are with you and family.
You did all the right things without any consideration of return and that is a honorable thing to do for your grandma in her time of need. Im very sorry about your loss. I can imagine she is up in the heaven right now mightly proud of you and I hope that does give you comfort.

As a grand-niece, I didn't do a whole lot. Sent cards. Showed up at family reunions (there are some good Aunt Helen stories there). And certainly gave folks something to talk about;)
Rocky really stepped up to the plate and took good care of his Nanna. He deserves a great deal of credit. And he has my undying respect.
