"North Carolina Is A State That Has Been Run By Lawyers"

Sayeth the N&O, to be governor, you've got to be a lawyer.

"The skills of the courtroom are easily translatable to the political arena. Lawyers tend to like politics, while business people tend to be wary of it. Business leaders in North Carolina have generally been content to let the lawyers run things. The business executives finance the lawyers' campaigns. And the lawyer-governors have been pro-business . . . from being anti-labor to offering financial incentives for new industry."

Rob Christensen's article ends with the not-so-subtle diss that perhaps a businessman running for the governor's office might be better off emphasizing his law degree: The skills in running a business are not the same as those needed to get elected to public office.

Grow up, Rob. What you need to get elected to public office is money . . . and those good-old-boy connections that no one wants to own up to. You just said it yourself, the businessmen have been content to let the lawyers run things . . . and they've put their money behind the lawyers.

And your favorite Presidential candidate, John Edwards, is proof-positive that it takes just a little bit more than flashing your law degree to get elected.

As for lawyers getting it right, you're talking to the wrong home-girl.
