(This is from the "Letters" section of Time Magaine, May 1, 2006)
"I am one of thousands of Indians who came to this country legally. I waited for a green card for five years, filled out multiple forms, paid taxes and abided by all the rules and laws. Millions of my countrymen are still awaiting a green card (let alone citizenship) after many years because they have followed the law. How fair is it to grant citizenship to people who entered illegally while legal immigrants have to wait to become Americans? It seems that it is advantageous to break the law in the U.S. The only solution is to let illegals remain and keep working, but to close the borders."

Shankar represents many of my friends in the medical profession (foreign born and trained) . . . . gifted and brilliant people who contribute much to our society. Yet they are forced to jump through hoop after hoop (even repeating residencies & fellowships in what amounts to glorified indentured servitude) pursing what others who have not followed the rules want to now demand as a "right", without accepting repsonsibility for the privilege.
"It is advantagous to break the law in the US."
No kidding.
